AI can read AI: how Gemini parses raw Adobe Illustrator files without an export

Gemini read a raw .ai file straight from a project’s Google Drive folder and returned SVG reconstructions and animation stubs. The reason is a PDF-compatible stream Adobe has embedded in Illustrator files since version 9.

Gemini 3.5 Flash parsed a raw Adobe Illustrator file straight from a project's Google Drive folder. No export, no conversion. It came back with a breakdown of every logo variation, SVG reconstructions of the vector paths, and CSS animation stubs derived from the brand geometry.

I was not testing the model. I was building The Watch Alley, and the brand kit had arrived as .ai files: logo lockups, colour inversions, the letter A formed by the hour and minute hands of a watch. The usual assumption is that you export those to PNG or SVG before an AI can touch them. I pointed the model at the file path to see what would happen. It did not fail.

Why this works

Since Illustrator 9, Adobe has embedded a PDF-compatible stream inside every .ai file saved with the default "Create PDF Compatible File" option. It exists so that macOS Quick Look and Acrobat can preview the file without opening Illustrator. It ships silently with every save.

A multimodal model with tool access does the obvious thing with that:

  1. Detect the PDF header inside the .ai container.
  2. Rasterise the embedded vector layer at high resolution (in this case with pdftoppm).
  3. Feed the raster through its vision stack and reason about what it sees.

From there it can describe design intent, reconstruct vectors and write code from the visual structure. It read the file the same way Quick Look does, through the hidden stream. Illustrator was never involved.

Why it is easy to miss

Most AI coding workflows assume the design assets have already been exported into something digestible. The standard advice is export first, then hand off to the agent. For .ai files that advice is now outdated.

Gemini 3.5 Flash shipped at Google I/O on 19 May 2026. I ran into this six days later, on a normal working afternoon, on the wrong file type. The parsing is not a party trick; it falls out of long agentic loops, multi-file reasoning and multimodal document analysis meeting a format that has quietly carried a PDF inside it for two decades.

What it changes for design handoff

  • Raw brand kits are readable. If Illustrator files land in a shared folder, an agent can open them, describe them, reconstruct the vectors and generate code without a designer exporting first.
  • Legacy archives become searchable. Millions of .ai files in old project folders can now be indexed and described without a human intermediary.
  • The handoff step moves. The designer's job shifts from exporting assets to approving what the agent reconstructed.

A caveat that matters: the model is reading a rasterised preview, then rebuilding vectors from what it sees. For a logo that is fine. For print-precise artwork, verify the reconstructed paths against the original before shipping.
